Tyler Perrys Disappointment in Prometheus Will Not Stop Him From Moving Into the Sci-Fi Genre
Article from /Film
Putting on a wig and fake boobs to portray Madea has brought Tyler Perry more fame and fortune than most of us could ever dream of, but even so it seems the filmmaker/actor is eager to explore new horizons. Earlier this week, we got to see him play cat and mouse with a crazed Jack Shephard in the Alex Cross trailer, and now Perry’s talking about moving on to a sci-fi project. Because, it turns out, he’s a huge fan of the genre — though like many other sci-fi aficionados, he was somewhat less than enthralled with Ridley Scott’s Prometheus. Read his comments after the jump.
In an interview with Blackfilm.com(via Collider), Perry declared his affection for sci-fi that isn’t Prometheus. After naming The Wiz as the first picture he’d ever seen in theaters*, he dished on what movies he really likes best. “I love sci-fi, I love the Alien movies and the Alien franchise,” he said. “I was very disappointed with Prometheus, but I love that whole franchise. Those are my favorite movies.”
Perry then added, “Im actually working on a sci-fi movie right now.” However, he declined to give away much more in the way of detail, saying only that he was currently writing it and that he was “really excited” about it.
Perry’s been involved with one high-profile sci-fi project before — he had a supporting role as Admiral Richard Barnett in J.J. Abrams’ first Star Trek — but since the vast majority of his works have been comedies or dramas featuring Madea, a sci-fi script would still mark a big departure for him. (Well, unless it turns out to beMadea’s International Space Station, in which case I suppose it’d just be a mild-to-moderate departure.) Regardless of whether or not it succeeds, you have to give the guy credit for at least attempting something new.
*Note from Russ: If you’ve never seen the film version of The Wiz, it is laced with a lot of almost-sci-fi (and very weird) designs, especially in the castle of Evillene, aka the Wicked Witch of the West.
