Sequels in all stages of production – from hypothetical, to development, greenlit, filming and finished – are all featured in today’s Sequel Bits. After the jump read about the following:
- A prequel to the video game Tekken might be on the way from the director of Ong Bak. Or not according to the creator.
- Not only would Andrew Stanton be open to making Finding Nemo 2, he feels Pixar will continue to make sequels after Monsters University and beyond.
- Watch an awesome 15 minute interview with Rick Baker, in his studio, talking Men in Black 3 monsters.
- Men in Black 3 didn’t have a lot of deleted scenes.
- Check out a teaser poster for Red 2
- Iron Man 3 starts shooting today and just got their budget increased.
- Mad Max: Fury Road with Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron starts shooting June 2.
In an interview over on The Hollywood Reporter, Crystal Sky Productions CEO Steven Paul revealed that he’s developing a prequel to the 2010 Tekken movie called Tekken: Rise of the Tournament. It’s envisioned as the first part of a series of film and Paul hopes that, based on the popularity of the video game franchise, it’ll get an international release. Prachya Pinkaew, who directed Ong Bak, is expected to head up the film.
Sounds promising, yes? Well, according to a tweet soon after by Katsuhiro Harada, the creator of the Tekken video game franchise, Paul might be putting the cart before the horse:
Why u guys ALWAYS believe a rumor and jumping the gun
We’ll have to wait and see. Anything would be better than the original film though. Thanks to ScreenRant for the heads up.
If you didn’t read my recap of the Los Angeles Times Hero Complex Film Festival, shame on you, you missed some gems. For example, did you know Andrew Stanton would be willing to do a second Finding Nemo if he found the right story and that he actually has been thinking about it? Or did you know that, inadditionto Monsters University, Stanton feels Pixar will continue to make sequels:
Im sure youll see some other sequels of things as they grow because now we are not so blinded. Its the originals that keep us really going and its the sequels that are like comfort food, and I think its the same way for the audience.
Also in that report, Peter Weller‘s thoughts on the RoboCop reboot, Zack Snyder‘s update on Man of Steel and a brief description of The World’s End by Simon Pegg just to name a few. Go. Now. I spent a lot of time on it.
Back to the regular sequel bits, HitFix got 15 minutes of quality time with legendary creature designer Rick Baker on the occasion of Men in Black 3, inside his mythic studio. Great stuff about the film and more in here.
Staying on Men in Black 3, director Barry Sonnenfeld spoke to Comic Book Movie and said there weren’t a lot of scenes left on the cutting room floor, just the clipboard:
There were very few scenes that didn’t make the cut. Most of the stuff we cut out, we cut out at script stage. There are a few little scenes, but nothing that’s hugely different.
With Cannes currently going on, a lot of upcoming movies get non-descriptteaser posters to let exhibitors and investors know they’re ready to go. One such film is Red 2, and Stark Industries (via CBM) found this teaser poster:
If you already read today’s Superhero Bits, thank you very much and you’ll already know about this bit. Latino Review reports that not only has Iron Man 3 begun filming today, but that based on the success of The Avengers, they’ve bumped up the budget from $140 to $200 million. They feel each Marvel movie now has a whole new bar do live up to. Good luck, Shane Black. Expect to see set photos and more very soon.
Finally, in an interview with MTV, Charlize Theron spoke about Mad Max: Fury Road and revealed the start date is June 2. Check out the clip below.
